Chillingham Castle Tourist Guide with its Ghosts.

Hotel, Ghosts, Holiday Apartments, Chillingham Castle Northumberland.

Chillingham is remarkable haunted castle with its alarming dungeons and torture chamber, since the twelve-hundreds, been continuously owned by the family of the Earls Grey and their relations. One of the most famous elements things is Chillingham Castle ghosts.

The state rooms

The state rooms are brilliantly furnished with both antique and modern furniture and lined with patterned silk screening hung with paintings and enamels.

The Edward 1st Room is the most ancient State Room . Here the Lords were secluded up high and safe; also well above the stench from the moats below. The room is named after the visit of "Proud Edward, Hammer of the Scots" in 1298, on his way to the battle of Falkirk where he captured William Wallace (Brave Heart), who had 'visited' the previous year, burning women and children in the local church. King Henry 111 will also have stayed here in 1245 when he came by for his Scottish forays. The gothic window over looking the garden may even have been designed by William of Durham who designed the Coronation Throne in Westminster Abbey which covered the famous Stone of Scone.

The castle Library also displays interesting family memorabilia and has a very fine chimney piece.

You will see active restoration of complex masonry, metalwork and ornamental plaster as the great halls thrive with day to day life. A wide diversity of rooms and style give a refreshing difference to the Castle.

The Surrounding Area and Fantastic Historic Northumberland

It is surrounded by lawns and formal gardens, including a topiary garden, with interesting clipped hedges. The woodland can be carpeted with flowers in the spring and early summer, making the walk to the lake an extraordinary experience.

Northumberland's wide-open landscapes and rolling hills are the ideal place for a break or a long holiday to get away from it all, providing room to breathe and space for contemplation.

The Ghosts and Hauntings

The ghosts Are quite famous. One of these is the "blue boy", who as midnight rang out would cry and moan in agony (or maybe fear). The noises could be traced to a spot near a passage cut through a ten foot wall.

When the bloodcurdling wails die away a soft halo of light appears around an old four poster bed. Anyone sleeping there, even today, can see the figure of a young boy dressed in blue, and surrounded by light. Behind the wall the bones of a young boy and fragments of blue clothing were discovered.

Another ghost, Lady Mary Berkeley, searches for her husband, who ran off with her sister. Lady Mary, desolate and broken hearted lived at Chillingham by herself with only her baby girl as a companion. The rustle of her dress can be heard as she passes you by in the turret stairs. But there are more....come and visit if you dare!

Part of the castle and the coach house have been converted into comfortable holiday apartments. There are some fine apartments to let in the actual castle and in the Castle’s near at hand Coaching Rooms where the coaches and horses were once kept. The Castle offers the opportunity for both small and large groups to enjoy a most memorable holiday. The coast nearby has spectacular beaches; Northumberland is a place of great natural beauty.

It is one of Northumberlands perfect Wedding Venue. The Elizabethan and Mediaeval State Rooms have housed many historic wedding feasts, and the Courtyard has seen all that colourful pageantry. The South Lawn fountains and the glorious Italian garden are ideal for lasting wedding photographs.
